Abby's First Place Poem

A few months ago Abby participated in a Writers Eye program and the University of Virginia. They went and toured the art museum and then had to write a poem or a story inspired by a piece of art they saw.

She got a letter in the mail yesterday informing her that out of 220 entries in the poetry category, her poem took first place!!! In March she will go to a special ceremony where she will be awarded a certificate of merit, a $50 check, a year membership to the art museum, her poem will be published in a book and she'll get a copy of the book and she'll read her poem out loud.

To say she was excited is an understatement! We are trilled for her.

Here is the link to see the piece of art she wrote about. You'll have to scroll down to number 7: entitled "Head."

And here's her poem:

Inspired by: Head

Artist: Kennth Hayes Miller

It was a dark night.

The wind howled.

Above a gravestone, a head.

Not man.

Not women.

But boy.

Hair covered the face.

Unblinking, red eyes.

Everything silent.

A bone chilling laugh.

Red eyes glinting.

Gone.

I told her all those hours and hours spent reading her fantasy novels are paying off! :) I guess I've got a budding little author on my hands.
