The Main Grounds

Sunday was such a beautiful fall day so after dinner we took the kids over the the main grounds of campus. We've taken the kids to Darden several times, but this was our first time at the Lawn and Rotunda at UVA.

UVA Fun Facts:

  • founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson
  • Jefferson helped design buildings, develop curriculum, recruit teachers and oversaw construction
  • James Madison and James Monroe were on the Board
  • Jefferson created the concept of Academic Village where students and faculty lived in the same building on the grounds to encourage interaction. The tradition continues today as select students and faculty are chosen to live on the lawn their senior year.

These Z's are found everywhere on campus and is symbol for a secret society of students...Zachary loved them.

Zachary's Birthday Party

It was three weeks late in coming...but it was worth the wait! Yesterday we finally had Zachary's much anticipated Star Wars party. He invited 5 little guys from church and he loved it all. Having a late party just extends the birthday fun! This was the first friend party we've done for him and he seemed to glow in the spotlight.

He wanted an R2D2 cake...and I was pretty pleased with how it turned out.

At McKenna's party last year Darth Vader greeted all the kids, this year we had our own storm trooper!

Jordon, Tyson, Spencer, Zachary and Nick...and of course Princess Leia in the window! :)

Party Rundown: Save Princess Leia, Jedi Training, Restore Order to the Galaxy, Darth Vader Pinata, Yoda Says, Asteroid Hunt, cake, presents, and of course some good old fashion light saber fighting.

Washington DC

Last Friday Bret had a conference up in DC with The World Bank. So I checked the kids out a little early from school and joined him that evening. We stayed the night and had a wonderful day Saturday exploring Washington with the kids. I'm so excited to be living as close as we are to this city. The museums, the history, our government...so much to expose the kids to and wonderful things to learn from. No doubt we're going to have some great field trips!

Saturday we went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Air and Space Museum. It was so much fun and the kids loved it. They wanted to see it all and even go to more museums. As we sat on the grass and played in between the Washington Memorial and the Capital Building I had to pinch myself that as a family we were really having these experiences. It was a blast.

Our own personal Buddy System...only it happens naturally.

And a first time trip to DC wouldn't be complete without a look at the White House. We had to remind Zachary several times that this is not where the Prophet lives, but where the President of our country lives. When talking beforehand about seeing the White House he said, "And if I was sick, we could go inside and he could give me a blessing and I would be all better!" This was the highlight for McKenna...she couldn't wait to tell her friends she say where the President lives AND that she touched a squirrel!

And then there were the big street vents. Oh the fun. Oh the joy. Oh the hot smelly air!

On our way back to Charlottesville we stopped at a Costco for dinner. It sounds crazy but it made me so happy. We didn't even buy anything but I was just happy to be there. Bret laughed when I said, "This is a happy place for me." I never thought I'd say that, but when there is no Costco around, I do miss it. All those wonderful Kirtland items, the great cuts of meat, everything your heart desires in bulk. I breathed it all in with a smile! And next time we're headed that way you better believe I'm bringing our cooler!

Mothers Who Know Honor Sacred Ordinances and Covenants

I have really enjoyed the opportunity of evaluating myself on many different levels these last few weeks as I focused on this aspect of Sister Becks talk. I feel that because of time spent pondering at home, at church and within the walls of temple, I have seen and felt my desire to live these principles grow.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Washington D.C. Temple with other sisters from our ward. I was really excited and looking forward to the day and felt that I "prepared" more then ever to go to the temple. Because this paragraph was on my mind I was grateful to share some of that preparation with my children. They saw me take time to wash and iron my temple dress and get things ready the night before. With Zachary by my side as I was ironing I was able to testify to him of the importance of Temples and how blessed we are to have them on the earth today. I was able to share with them how excited I was to go to the House of the Lord, how I had been praying to receive answers and to feel an abundance of the spirit. I felt that not only did I put in more physical preparation to the attend the temple but spiritual as well, having a strong desire to get the most out of my time there as possible. Knowing I was going to be attending the end of the week, it became the focus of my personal prayers and as a result I experienced the spiritual difference as I went through the temple that day. I felt a greater renewal of body, mind and spirit. I felt a greater sense of peace and assurance. I felt an increase of confidence in my mothering. And I have felt the influence of the temple continue with me longer then any other time.

This being said, I also felt the "inconvenience" of it all. I have been blessed my entire life of living within a close proximity to a temple. The longest I have had to drive was 45 min. when we were living in Arizona. From Georgia, Utah, Arizona and Texas I have taken for granted and not appreciated the close proximity of temples to the fullest. As a ward here, we were to meet at 6:00 a.m. last Saturday to make it for the 9:30 session. Living 30 min. away from the church I had to leave my house at 5:30 a.m. and did not get home until 4:00 p.m. I couldn't help but compare in my mind with how much easier it was to attend the temple other places we have lived. It was a hassle, a challenge, and yes, an inconvenience. But as I sat in the temple that Saturday morning I had a complete shift in my thinking. I was overcome with gratitude for only living 2 hours away from a temple of the Lord. Yes, it is more difficult to attend then other areas, but it is manageable and doable. It can still be done in a day. I don't have to scrimp and save only to be able to attend the temple once in my lifetime like many other Latter-day Saints around the world do. It was wonderful to feel such a sudden change of thought and know that it came about only by and through the spirit.

I have pondered deeply how I personally and as a family we prepare for the Sabbath Day. I have been praying about this, desiring to improve our preparations as a family and today had that prayer answered in sacrament meeting. With having church early in the morning and Bret being gone for early meetings much of our marriage we have gotten the Saturday night routine down. From baths and showers to getting the cloths and shoes ironed and ready we are set. But the last few weeks I haven't been able to get out of my mind the primary song, "Saturday is a special day, it's the day we get ready for Sunday." And I've asked myself the question, how am I helping my children get ready for Sunday on a spiritual level, especially when more often then not Saturdays have become busy and full of projects, errands, or fun family outings. Today a friend spoke on preparing ourselves to partake of the sacrament and part of her talk answered this concern I had been feeling. It's not just Saturday to prepare for Sunday, but Thursday and Friday as well. She expressed that as she did this and prepared in advance physically for Sunday so it was not a Saturday night rush, she was able to prepare spiritually and mentally as well because her thoughts were naturally drawn to that sacred day. This is where I stand in need of improvement! Preparing physically well in advance by getting cloths washed and ironed as well as Sunday dinner plans so I'm not running to the grocery store every Saturday night at 8:30. I don't think her talk would have impacted me as much if I had not been pondering, praying and studying about this these last few weeks.

The words that made an impact on me from this paragraph were "great care." I thought of teaching my children the importance of preparing for church with "great care." Talking to them of the temple and sharing appropriate experiences there with "great care." Teaching them with "great care" how vital these ordinances and covenants are in our lives. Knowing that "if I am not pointing my children to the temple, I am not pointing them toward desired eternal goals."

Remembering

Eight years ago today I held my one day old baby girl in the hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

I sat with her in my arms, glued to the TV as tears streamed down my face.

My eyes moved between her beautiful, innocent and perfect little face and the horribly frightening images on the screen.

Neither one will I ever forget.

I remember questioning what kind of world this precious daughter of God was going to be a part of.

I remember an overwhelming desire to protect her innocence.

I remember the concern, the emotions, the worries.

Over the past 8 years, I have seen that baby grow, develop and become.

Today I sent her out the door knowing she has an inner strength that will see her through whatever the world throws her way.

I watched her walk down the driveway knowing she is equipped with a strong testimony of her Savior, His restored gospel and of living prophets.

Today I am grateful for her light and her influence.

Today I remember. Today I am grateful.

Abby's Birthday

8 Things I Love About Abigail
  1. She sets such a wonderful example for her sister and brothers.
  2. She is my little chef in training. I have always loved cooking for my family, especially on Sundays. But recently they have become more fun for me as she now helps out with the entire meal. I love it and it truly has become a special time for us.
  3. Her goodness. When I think of Abby the first word that comes to mind is "good". She has such a desire to choose the right and do those things her Heavenly Father wants her to do. She is just such a good girl.
  4. Responsible. Does she sound like the typical oldest child yet? One thing I love about Abby is I can always count on her being responsible when it comes to school work/papers. If I tell her to give a note to the teacher, I don't have to remind her 10 times before she walks out the door. It takes a lot of the hassle out of it and for that I'm grateful.
  5. Abby is extremely creative. I love to see her imagination at work. Whether it comes out in play, writing stories or making up songs Abby is blessed with a very creative mind.
  6. She loves to read! As a mother who loves to read myself this makes me so happy!
  7. Goal Oriented. Abby loves to set goals for herself and see them through. One example of this is when she was in the first grade she set a goal for herself to read the Book of Mormon by herself by the time she was baptized. Tomorrow she will finish the Book of Mormon. It hasn't always been easy, but she has stuck with it and I am so proud of her for it!
  8. Abby is mature beyond her 8 years. She is an "old soul". While I admit sometimes this brings on a little frustration (such as when we are doing things with other families she doesn't want to go play with the kids but instead would rather sit and listen to adults,) but this also gives her a deep spiritual strength and understanding of gospel principles. I am amazed at her ability to liken the scriptures unto herself, to draw out principles and application.

When did my little girl get so big? I can't believe that Abby turned 8 years old today. She's growing up right before my eyes and I just want time to slow down a little. I am so grateful for this beautiful daughter of mine.
I was able to go meet Abby for lunch at school and bring in some cupcakes. I was so excited that at this school I could actually bring something in homemade and not store bought! Abby wanted me to make rose cupcakes.

So after making 28 of them (there's only 20 in her class but she likes to give them to other teachers too) I headed off to school for the fun birthday celebration.

After school we opened presents. Abby got a nice set of scriptures, Harry Potter IV, a CTR necklace from Grandma and Grandpa and $20 which she chose to put straight into the dog fund!

We had a great feast of maple glazed pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes, and sunshine glazed carrots, topped off with Strawberry Pie for desert! She is one who definitely appreciates good food!

She shared her wish with me...I hope that means it will still come true for her. She wished she could see Elizabeth and Zach again, her two best friends back in Texas.

Happy Birthday Abigail Rose! I love you!

All In the Span of 5 Minutes...

Literally within 5 minutes today I found Gavin here:

And here...

Yes, this is the top of my kitchen table!

And here...

Boy, do I love this kid. But I don't love how he opens the pantry cupboard incessantly throughout the day pulling out whatever is within reach...(including sacks of potatoes and Costco size olive oil!) I don't love how he climbs on top of the kitchen table 45 times a day, or opens any and every cupboard pulling out whatever he pleases.
AHHH!
In spite of all this, he is pretty darn cute and I can't help but smile and think how much I love him!

Zachary's Birthday

Five Things I Love About Zachary:

  1. He is ALL boy! He loves anything and everything boyish...from yard work to construction, Star Wars to Spider man, trucks to trains, golf to football.
  2. Zachary has a love of learning and is VERY intelligent. He is a very verbal child and his capacity to learn at a young age has always amazed me.
  3. Zachary has a love for the gospel. Without fail he is always the one to remind us of family scripture study and family prayer if either Bret or I forget. And as he said today, "Jason is my best friend, but Jesus is my best, best, friend."
  4. Along those lines, he has a real sensitivity to the Spirit. He is quick to recognize the Holy Ghost and the good feelings he has when the Spirit is present.
  5. Zachary is very obedient. I so appreciate this about him. If he understands the "why" he will follow any direction given him. Not only this but he is quick to obey

I can't believe my little buddy turned five today. He is a real joy in my life and brings so much light and happiness to each and every day. He informed me as soon as he woke up that his feet were bigger, his legs were longer so they could run fast, his arms were longer, and yes, even his thumbs were bigger. And I think he just may be right!

Today was all about him as it should be. But what I loved about it was the the excitement and happiness that came from such simplicity. Much of the day was spent out on his bike, either in the back yard going down the little hill or out in the cul-d-sac.

We made rice-crispy treats together and ate them right out of the bowl. And we spent a lot of time playing games...war, memory, sequence, and of course..."Ticket to Train!" And he even decided not to go out to eat at his favorite chicken place (Cane's Chicken) and put that money in the dog fund! He was patient all day waiting to open presents till we were all together before dinner. He was thrilled with his new scooter (thank you Craigs List,) the trucks from Grandma and Grandpa, and the Star Wars Space Ship.

One of the major highlights of the day was exploring the train track with Daddy and putting pennies on the track before the train came. It was the first time over the fence and he really loved it.

When I said there was a track literally twenty feet from our back fence...you can see what I mean!

Afterwords we all came in for some yummy ice cream...he wanted to save his Star Wars cake for his Star Wars birthday party.

Boy oh boy do I love these guys!

Happy Birthday Zachary!
